Appearance: Hakkai is a tall, thin man with short brown hair and green eyes. He wears three silver ear cuffs in his left ear, which limit his youkai powers. He wears a green shirt, tan pants with a belt, brown shoes, and a green bandanna to hold back his bangs. The shirt is long sleeves, and clasps on the right side below the shoulder. From just below the elbows to the wrists the shirt is covered by black armbands.

Personality: Hakkai is a very protective person, and will do what he can to protect people he cares about. He is usually a calm, polite person, but when he gets angry he can be downright scary. He is quite witty, and often teases his friends.

He has a lot of guilt issues, and as a consequence he has an excessive need for things to be clean, and obsessive impulse as a talisman to keep bad things from happening. He would happily sacrifice himself if it meant he could help someone. He doesn’t like to be separated from people, especially Gojyo, for too long; he needs to occasionally assure himself that they are okay.

Abilities/Strengths/Weapons: Hakkai is good at hand-to-hand combat. He also knows how to wield a knife, but his real weapon is his ki, or life energy. He is able to concentrate he ki into balls to attack, and to make protective barriers using it. Hakkai can also use his ki to heal injuries. He never ‘learned’ his various ki abilities, he just decided to try them out, and they worked. If he removes his ear cuffs his power multiplies, as he can access his true youkai power, which not only makes him stronger, but allows him to use vines his body creates for attacks. Hakkai likes children and is very good at dealing with them. He is also very good at household chores, such as cooking and cleaning.

Weaknesses: The fact that he uses his ki to fight can often be a weakness, as using it is draining. Especially since he is also self-sacrificing, so he’d rather drain himself completely than let others be hurt. His past is another weakness; there is a lot he hasn’t even started to get over. He can’t stand messes, and feels a compulsion to clean up any he comes across. But perhaps his greatest weakness is his friends. He cares about them a lot, and because of that they can be used against him. Hurting them or separating him from Gojyo is the worst way to hurt him.

Weapons/Notable Possessions: Hakkai has a small, smooth stone that he always keeps on his person.

History: Hakkai is the reincarnation of the god Tenpou, who was Field Marshal of the army of heaven. He was born as a youkai named Cho Gonou and grew up with his parents and his sister Kanan.

Gonou was the type of child who really liked to read, but he was also very fond of playing outside with his sister. He was an untidy child, in the habit of just leaving his books and things lying around, more out of forgetfulness than purposely ignoring his mother’s oft-repeated instructions to clean things up. One rainy day when he was eight, Kanan called him out to play with her. He'd been in the middle of a book binge, as it were, and his things were a mess. His mother told him to clean up before leaving, but he figured he could always do it later, and he went out to play with Kanan before doing so.

That day was not such a good day for the town he lived in. While Gonou was out playing with Kanan, the town was attacked. Gonou has the misfortune to witness Kanan's death, stabbed from behind unexpectedly. The attacker slashes Gonou’s stomach open before going off to revel in more destruction in the village proper. Gonou was in shock from Kanan’s death and his own injury, but he manages to stumble back home, carrying his sister’s body. He gets there to find that his parents, along with most of the town’s population, are also dead.

He and a few other children who survived are taken and sent as tribute to Gyokumen, a youkai queen in the west who has been building a power base over many of the youkai clans, who are all expected to send such tribute. Gonou’s injury got infected, and he was unconscious for some time on the trip west. When he awoke, he called himself Hakkai.

There are children from other parts of the land at Gyokumen’s castle who were given as tribute, and more to arrive sporadically for years. The tribute children are made servants at Gyokumen’s castle, and are generally bullied by her followers. The full youkai among the tribute children are forced to wear limiters, to add to the power held over them. Hakkai himself has to wear three of them. He became obsessed with keeping things clean because he believes that his village was attacked because he didn't clean up his mess, and thinks if he lets things get messy, even more bad things will happen

While Hakkai was polite and obedient to his captors, even with the limiters he's more powerful than a lot of them as he got older, and is somewhat scary to them. He generally protects a lot of the other tribute children, especially the ones younger than him, scaring their harassers with his scary, cold politeness. One of the other tribute children, just about his own age and arriving not long after he did, was called Gojyo, and he and Hakkai soon become inseparable, taking care of each other, and making plans that someday they'll manage to get away from here.

When Hakkai was nineteen, there started to be rumors around the castle that a monk called Genjo Sanzo and his follower were on a mission to stop Gyokumen. The attacks Gyokumen sent against the monk, even sending her step-son, Kougaiji, and his followers, always failed. Rumors fly among the tribute children, a great number of whom are no longer exactly children. As the monk comes closer, Hakkai and Gojyo plan to join up with him. They break out of the castle, killing some of Gyokumen’s followers on the way out, but mostly trying to get out as stealthily as possible. One of Kougaiji’s followers, Dokugakuji, who is, surprising to them, Gojyo’s half-brother, helps them get out of the castle, but before they get to joining up with the monk, Hakkai is pulled into Econtra.
